Diwali is one of the most popular festivals of Hindus. It is celebrated every year in autumn in the northern hemisphere (spring in southern hemisphere). Diwali is an official holiday in many countries including India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore, and Fiji. Diwali is also known as Deepavali, Dipavali, Dewali, Deepawali, or the Festival of Lights. It is a five-day festival which starts on Dhanteras, followed by Naraka Chaturdasi on second day, Diwali on third day, Padwa on fourth day and Bhau-beej on fifth day. Diwali is the biggest and the brightest of all Hindu festivals. It is the festival of lights: during this festival, Hindus light up their homes and temples with diyas (small oil lamps made of clay). On Diwali night, Hindus dress up in new clothes or their best outfit, light up diyas inside and outside their homes, participate in puja (prayers) to Lakshmi the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and exchange gifts with family and friends. Diwali is a celebration of the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Hindus believe that on this day, Lord Rama an incarnation of the god Vishnu returned to his kingdom Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana. For this reason, Diwali is also known as the 'Festival of Victory'. Diwali is also a celebration of the harvest. In some parts of India, it marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the winter season. For farmers, Diwali is a time to give thanks for a good harvest and to pray for a prosperous new year. Diwali is a time for family and friends to get together, have fun and feast and also to share diwali shayari. Homes are cleaned and decorated, and special food is prepared. On Diwali night, people set off fireworks and crackers. Diwali is a special time for Hindus all over the world. It is a time to celebrate, to be with family and friends, and to enjoy the festivities.
